Exactly for that purpose, i wanted to take the guestbook offline without deleting the links because the menu script is a pain in the arse.

I don't know if cleaning up 5 pages of spam is that effective though, since obviously that very sort of guestbook is prone to automated spamming programs - at the moment i'm considering moving to another guestbook script or not having a guestbook at all, since not many bigger communities have one anyway.

Or we could open a guestbook subforum with anonymous posting access..

Nah .. I think leave it out. The last time I checked a enrty in the book was from a long time ago as normal people (not spammers) tend to either join or leave without comment.

The forum will yeld the same problem as the guestbook and the shoutout box.
People will just need to join if they want to say something. That cuts out any automated spamming and gives us a bit more controll over what goes on the pages.
