anti-halloween tendencies in europe?

Halloween is nigh, and while the American custom is catching on in Europe, not everyone thinks it's a great idea. A small but vocal group -- including clerics, politicians, cops and just plain folk -- are urging their fellow Europeans to reject Halloween, which they say 1.) promotes crass American commercialism 2.) has no basis in European culture 3.) gives thugs a reason to vandalize and 4.) takes away from All Saints' Day on Nov. 1. But it's big business -- Germans spent a reported $170 million on Halloween costumes and decorations last year -- so if it's going to die, it'll die hard. Because the European's dirty little secret is that he's as crassly commercial and venal as we are.

will the centuries old european cultural heritage be undermined by celebrating a holiday we europeans invented ourselves more than a thousand years before america was discovered, let alone the US were founded to hijack it?

My parents were certainly against it. Found the whole trick or treat thing little more than akin to begging and very crass and "American".

Good job they nipped that in the bud. Who knows, left unchecked, I might have married an American, or god forbid, moved there. 😉

i only hope i won't see the day you claim to be an "american" now.
don't let them impress you with the oversized fridges dude! it's not worth it - they will make you trade your nationality for unlimited refills at McDonald's 🙁

me an american? not bloody likely.. I might one day hold a passport to speed me through customs, but I'll always be a Brit.

The refils don't impress me, after all it is just "soda". Unlimited beer refils, we might be talking.

Though, their big fridges ARE handy..... 😈

and cost a fortune over here in stainless steel edition.

together with current fuel prices in .de that might be almost a point to move 😉
